NCC Don Approve Make Telecom Operators Increase Tariff By 50%

Di Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) don approve tariff adjustment wey telecom operators request, but dem set di maximum increase to no pass 50 per cent.

Dis one na wetin Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs for NCC, yarn inside one statement wey dem release give news people on Monday.

NCC tok say: “Based on di power wey Section 108 of di Nigerian Communications Act, 2003 (NCA) give dem to regulate and approve tariff rates wey telecom operators dey charge, dem go allow adjustment of tariff rates as di network operators request, sake of di market condition wey dey now.”

Dem explain say even though di increase no reach di over 100 per cent wey some network operators ask for, di commission consider di reforms wey dey happen for di industry wey fit help di sustainability.

“Di new adjustments go still dey inside di tariff range wey NCC Cost Study for 2013 set, and di requests go dey look one by one as di Commission dey always do for tariff reviews.

“Dem go follow di NCC Guidance on Tariff Simplification, 2024, wey dem just release.

“Since 2013, tariff rates never change, even as cost of operation don dey go up for telecom operators.

“Di approval na to reduce di gap wey dey between di money wey operators dey spend and di current tariff, while still making sure say consumers no go suffer for service,” NCC yarn.

Dem talk say di adjustments go help operators fit still invest for better infrastructure and innovation.

Di NCC add say di change go later benefit consumers with better network quality, improved customer service, and wider coverage.

Dem still yarn say after dem consult with plenty stakeholders for di public and private sectors, dem balance di matter so e go favour both consumers and di telecom industry.

“NCC dey try make sure say dem protect telecom consumers and at di same time make di industry dey sustainable, especially for di plenty Nigerian vendors and suppliers wey dey part of di telecom ecosystem.

“Na why dem order operators to make sure say di adjustment dey clear and fair to consumers. Operators go also gree make di public sabi di new rates and show how e go improve service delivery,” NCC talk.

Di Commission still talk say dem go continue to make sure di telecom industry dey strong, innovative, and inclusive.

Dem add say apart from protecting consumers, di moves wey dem dey make na to keep di industry sustainable, support local vendors and suppliers, and boost di growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.

“As di regulator, NCC go still dey work with stakeholders to make di telecom environment better for everybody—one wey go protect consumers, help operators, and sustain di ecosystem wey dey drive connectivity for di country,” dem yarn.
