A song by Ed Sheeran ‘Shape Of You,’ has become the first song to exceed three billion streams on Spotify.
The song has spent almost five years on Spotify, having been uploaded in January 2017.
It's a single from Ed Sheeran’s third album 'Divide'.
The song's streaming success has propelled the singer to speak on its origin lately. He used the words “chuffed” to describe how he felt and “totally wild” to describe the news that the song has attained this height when talking about the origin of the song in a video published by Spotify.
Ed Sheeran remarks:
“‘Shape Of You’ wasn’t really meant to make the album,” he explained, “but when I finished making the song, Ben Cook, from my label, said it had to be a single – but I wanted ‘Castle On The Hill’ to be the single. We agreed to disagree and put both songs out at once. And I have to say, Ben, I was wrong and you were very much right. And here we are with ‘Shape of You’ at three billion.”
Spotify dropped a short comment on the Instagram video asking fans to tell their stories emanating from the track:
