Grammy-Nominated Artist Seun Kuti Placed Under Arrest

Nigeria Police Force has arrested Grammy-nominated Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti after he assaulted a police officer.

Mixed feelings surround the arrest of iconic Afrobeats pioneer singer Fela Kuti's youngest son Seun Kuti after he slapped a police officer in uniform.

According to a viral video that circulated the social media, Seun Kuti was seen hitting a police officer on Third Mainland Bridge on the 13th of May, 2023.

However, Seun Kuti claimed the officer tried to kill him and his family.

"He tried to kill me and my family. I have the proof but I no dey chase clout. He has apologized and I have agreed not to press charges. Make una mind una business make the poor guy no lose him job." He posted on Instagram.

Just hours after the video circulated online, the IGP ordered the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Omohunwa to place the singer under arrest while the force investigate.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi issued a statement saying such acts will not be tolerated.

According to a statement released online: "The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform.

"The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly.

"IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book.”.

The singer and performer was placed under arrest on the 15th of May 2023.
